Ongoing History Daily: David Bowie's failed movie

In the middle 70s, despite being drunk or coked out of his head most of the time, David Bowie was on a creative roll. And it wasn’t just music. He’d become very interested in acting, thanks to his part as the doomed alien in The Man Who Fell to Earth in 1975. He had his own idea for a film, too.

Bowie contacted Flo & Eddie, the guys behind the band The Turtles. They were flown to New York to discuss the script of The Traveler, which was 750 pages long. It involved Bowie drifting through all his different characters in different environments, like cruise ships, parties with eccentric heiresses, and ripping off diplomats.

There were a couple of meetings about the project before Bowie ghosted everyone. The Traveler was never made—and that was probably a good thing.
